“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
everlasting life.” John 3:16
The truth of Christmas is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christmas would be empty and meaningless without the good news of God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, who was conceived in the virgin Mary by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says,
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,’ which is translated, ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:21-23).
God intersected time and space to give us His only begotten Son, conceived by God and born of a virgin, and this baby grew to be fully God and fully man without sin to die on the cross, the most important and magnificent event in the history of mankind, to defeat sin and death. The birth of Christ leads to the cross, death, and resurrection of Christ, and those who believe in Him are forgiven of their sins and “shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
What is the gospel? The gospel is the true biblical message of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for, and in the place of sinners, and those sinners who believe in Christ are forgiven of their sins and receive the gift of salvation for everlasting life in Him.
To many in the world today, the true meaning of Christmas and the gospel of Jesus Christ is a fairy tale. However, as unbelievable as the virgin birth may be for many people, God becoming flesh as a baby is even more unbelievable. But this supernatural event is foretold by prophecies throughout the Old Testament and fulfilled by the life of Jesus Christ, and His life on earth and His resurrected body after His crucifixion and death were seen by eyewitnesses and historically documented in the New Testament.
This is the true meaning of Christmas – the gospel of Jesus Christ. God has come into this world to be with us – “Immanuel, which translated means, ‘God with us.’” God revealed Himself to us in a special way, and this is special revelation so that we may truly know God. Without special revelation from God, Jesus Christ in the flesh, we would not and could not know the living God. But by God’s amazing grace, He gave us His Son to dwell among us so that we may know Him.
Listen to John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from God the Father, full of grace and truth.” The birth of Jesus Christ leads to the cross, death, and resurrection of Christ for the salvation of those who believe in Him. Do you believe in the truth of Christmas? Do you believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ? If not, make this Christmas season the glorious time when you believe in Jesus Christ and receive the gift of salvation for everlasting life in Him.
Merry Christmas and may God bless you with His grace, love, and truth!
