He who says he abides in Him ought himself
also to walk just as He walked. (1 John 2:6)
In the Bible, “walking with the Lord,” reveals a living and loving relationship with God through saving faith in Jesus Christ and seeking God’s guidance through His Word as we follow Christ and obey Him. An unbeliever cannot walk with the Lord, but a believer begins walking with Him as soon as he or she is born again into the family of God through faith in Christ.
“Walking with the Lord” means trusting the Lord to guide us in all our ways by His infinite truth, knowledge, and wisdom revealed to us in His Word instead of relying on our own finite
understanding. Whether we are referring to an Old Testament believer who looked to the future and trusted in the Messiah (Anointed One) who was to come for salvation, or a New Testament believer, who looks to the past and trusts in the Christ (Anointed One) who has come for salvation, the Bible says the Lord’s ways are to become our ways.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
In the New Testament, the Greek word for “walk” peripateo means to physically walk, to live, or to follow. It can be used literally or figuratively, and when used figuratively its meaning has spiritual overtones, such as the way a believer or unbeliever walks through life. An unbeliever walks in darkness (1 John 1:6) and a believer walks in the light (Eph. 5:8).
Jesus Christ has come to fulfill all the prophecies, promises, and covenants of the Old Testament and accomplish God’s redemptive plan of salvation for all who have faith in Him. For Christians, there are many verses that describe the believer’s spiritual walk with the Lord. Here are a few: For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God
prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
For you were once darkness, but now you are children of light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light. (Ephesians 5:8).
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise. (Ephesians 5:15)
I hope you see from these verses that all believers are to walk worthy of the calling by which we are called as Christians (Eph. 4:1). We have a new life in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17), we are in a new family as children of God (1 John 3:1), we are to walk according to the truth of God’s Word as He guides our steps (Psalm 119:105), and we are to trust our Lord Jesus Christ at all times and in all things (Prov. 3:5-6).
Walking with the Lord implies progressing through life following Jesus Christ and His divine
truth. This ongoing spiritual progression of the believer is known as sanctification, which is the work of God’s grace in the believer’s life whereby we are set apart to God and grow in holiness (1 Pet. 1:15-16).
This book, Walking with the Lord: The Believer’s Life in Christ, will examine God’s glorious
work of sanctification in the life of every Christian, and each chapter will consider the biblical
aspects of our spiritual walk, such as walking in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16), walking in love (Eph.
5:2), walking in wisdom (Eph. 5:15-17), walking in humility (Eph. 4:1-2), and walking in the
light (1 John 1:7).
